Everything You Need to Know About Mint Collectables

Updated: Oct 20, 2022

Our submission partners are the heart and soul of everything we do at Platinum Standard Grading and each one of them plays an important part in serving our customers. Our Q&A series allows us to shine a spotlight on some of our submission partners each month as we learn more about their store and background in the card hobby.

In this month's spotlight we have the Sunshine Coasts very own Mint Collectables.

How long have you or your business been in the trading card hobby?

Personally, it’s hard to recall a pack of cards I ever opened. As a kid I definitely collected Yu Gi Oh and Pokemon cards, as many of us kids did in the late 90s. My first genuine experience in the sports card hobby was in 2018, as a basketball mad fan I discovered a few online videos of people opening cards, we didn’t have a local card shop in Brisbane at the time, so the first chance I had to find some packs was on a trip to Singapore later that year, where I found a box of 2018 Prizm Hobby Basketball. That was my first box, from there my love for collecting spiralled and I never looked back. Mid 2020 was when I first decided to turn my hobby into a business, launching an online store, followed by opening our storefront in April 2021.

When was the first time you bought a pack of cards and what was it?

As above, 2018 on a trip to Singapore was my first instance of opening up a pack of basketball cards. 2018/19 Prizm Hobby Basketball was my first pack.

What products do you look forward to the most each year?

I love Donruss Optic, that’s probably my favourite release, the clean designs and shiny cardboard catch my attention! Haha. I also love seeing some of the higher end releases each year, it’s rare we get to see them in store but some of the sets such as Flawless and Impeccable are very exciting every year as well.

Do you guys specialise in any sub-culture within the industry?

Basketball is definitely our main focus at Mint. However we also take pride in having a huge variety of products, everything from Rugby League and AFL, to Pokemon, Magic: The Gathering and entertainment cards from IP’s such as Star Wars and Marvel.

Why are you passionate about what you do?

I just love sports, I think collecting sports cards is just another way to bring yourself closer to the action and gets you involved in a whole extra element. The connection we make between cardboard and the sporting field is magical and that’s why I’m passionate about this business.

Who is your hero?

Steph Curry. I love the amount of love that man has for playing the game. Watching him cook up a barrage of 3’s and the positive energy he gives off while doing it is the kind of passion I love to see on and off the sporting field.
