Everything You Need to Know About Local Card Shop

Updated: Oct 20, 2022

Our submission partners are the heart and soul of everything we do at Platinum Standard Grading and each one of them plays an important part in serving our customers. Our Q&A series allows us to shine a spotlight on some of our submission partners each month as we learn more about their store and background in the card hobby.

In this month's spotlight we have Brisbane and the Gold Coast's go to Local Card Shop.

How long have you or your business been in the trading card hobby?

I have been collecting since I was 8 years, old more than 40 years ago. I started collecting Scanlens VFL cards and since then I've enjoyed collecting all Australian sports as well as NBA and some obscure non-sports cards. Local Card Shop itself has been open since June (Woolloongabba store) and our Gold Coast pop-up shop has been open for a couple months now.

When was the first time you bought a pack of cards and what was it?

1977. My Mum gave me 20 cents to buy a packet of VFL cards.

What products do you look forward to the most each year?

I look forward to the new Australian sports releases because it is a growth area in the hobby.

Do you guys specialise in any sub-culture within the industry?

The 'face-to-face' sub-culture. A return to the old fashioned local card shop where there is always someone there to have a chat to about cards and talk about upcoming releases.

Why are you passionate about what you do?

A long term love of Australian sports.

Who is your hero?

Peter Norman. Winner of the silver medal in the 1968 Mexico Olympics. He stood up for what he believed in by participating in the black power salute during the medal ceremony. To this day he still holds the 200m Australian record.
